What is Artificial Intelligence?

In computer science, artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is complex intelligence simulated by computer programs or apps, in contrast to the biological intelligence displayed by humans.

Put simply, AI is a series of right and wrong learnings by a computer program (often called machine learning) that, over time, evolves the machine's capabilities to predict, produce and determine desired outcomes.

Ultimately, AI will be like having an assistant surgeon and clinical assistant guiding you and helping make decisions allowing you to help more patients with less stress and better outcomes.

Examples of AI you are familiar with and probably using:

  • Ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft
  • Commercial flights use AI autopilot
  • Siri
  • Voice to text features
  • Spam filters

How can it benefit your clinic/patients?

We are pioneers in using AI in our field. It has the potential, and we truly believe it will revolutionize our patient care.

As we progress with AI machines, we are able to take current statistics, physical exams, imaging and real-time result analytics to guide the machine’s understanding of what is right and wrong based on hundreds of thousands of data points.

This is something that we are just beginning to explore with a larger beta group, and I am so excited to adopt these technologies to benefit our profession as orthopedic clinicians.

With less time, energy and resources spent in your clinic, your patients have the potential to receive outstanding care and results that will impact their body’s health in ways that we simply can’t yet. We could get to the point where your medical assistants could load up the machine and have 2-3 options available for treatment.
